Now i just gotta find some cool crowds to pal around NYC with. I was hoping to meet some spinners and dancers and otherwise awesome folk who live in New York. I want to find some friends to practice poi with as well...my own skills are getting stagnant...

but basically I was just posting to say Hey!

Heya all~

My name's Faye. I've relocated back to the Island from Western Mass/Vermont
and suddenly find myself without anyone to spin with.

Looking for anyone on the Island who spins or does any performaning arts
and may want to chill - I do poi, hoop, some non-fire fan work and love to dance.
I'm also desperately searchign for any activity of a similar nature on the Island.
Train tickets to the city are SO expensive.

Hi from Dallas! Truth is - Desperately seeking something lost at the playa.
Yuval kindly gave my friend Dan a ride from Reno to the desert. Dan left something very valuable in Yuval's car. A gift from me to my boyfriend. A hand crafted coat with hours of loving labor. Yuval confirms he has the coat. But the trail runs cold there.
Any help anyone can provide in contacting this Chelsea Burner would be wildly appreciated.
Yuval has a web site: http://www.yboogie.com/
Jizzy (seamstress) can be reached at: janelleis@hotmail.com
Much love, Jizzy

Fire Spinning Jam on 9/23

[This is a relay post originally from FireBird ( http://people.tribe.net/firebird ) at nyfire.tribe.net]

Sorry for the delay. I am live at an internet cafe posting this since I have no comp at home. Sunday night fire is on again, at Grand Space, this time starting at **6pm**. Now it gets dark earlier

6pm: Potluck BBQ and fire-less poi/staff/etc practice, maybe some
informal lessons for the new folks.

7:30pm - 8pm: (dusk) Fire! Bring fuel if you have it, or a buck or two to
contribute to the folks who are bringing extra.

Once again, this is NOT AN OFFICIAL GRAND SPACE EVENT so don't ring the Grand Space buzzer. Call me if the doors are closed: we'll be on the ROOF, so the doorbell won't help. PM me if you need my phone number.

Grand Space: tinyurl.com/2aaowu
Not far from the Brooklyn Museum 2/3 stop. Also close to the C line
Fulton/Washington stop; check with MTA, I think the A train makes local
stops there over the weekend.

Fire for TheDanger this Saturday

Greetings Fire people --

Give me a holler if you'd like to display some incendiary action for this tomorrow night. Fuel shall be provided.

love.d.
-----------------

ArtistsWanted, 3rd Ward Brooklyn, TheDanger, Ad-Hoc Arts,
The American Water Color Movement, Subatomic Sound System
and Black Crack Records, and ImageNode invite you to the return of:

I (heart) DANGER

Saturday, July 28th, 10pm to 7am
Nine hours of interactive fire art, dj's, dance and aesthetic
decadence launching our new project: Artists Wanted.

Explore a maze of beautiful detritus, danger art, dancers,
dj's, bubble domes, ice-sculpture, and fire performance
from the same artists and mischief-makers that brought you
July 14th's One Night of Fire.

In the room of Brick:

The American Water Color Movement (10pm)
An inspiring mix of live groove and visuals that is both
frightening and calming all at once ' it's a strange
groove, because it somehow inspires both movement and
paralysis. Movement because the rhythm is so intoxicating,
and paralysis because of the feeling that some major moment
is going down and all you can do is stand back and watch.

Subatomic Sound System (11pm)
Born at the turn of the millennium during a collision of
circuit boards, New York City asphalt, and human skin,
this live group of seasoned musicians experiments with
hip-hop, dub reggae, dancehall and drum and bass with
excessive exposure to gamma radiation. They are as
danceable as they are poetic, a dangerous sound that is
not to be missed.

After Midnight:
DJ Grimace brings classic hip-hop and loin shaking street
funk classics.

$mall(c)hange continues the classic theme digging deep
into his endless crates upping the BPM as the collective
heartbeat of the dance-floor rises.

Zemi17 plays through sunrise with his eclectic mix of
Indonesian house to transcendent intelligent techno.

In the third floor Dome (you have to see it to believe it):
The Imagenode Collective offer art, music and wonderful things.
Autophage brings ambient glitch-hop with a nerdcore vibe.
North guinea hills and dj prancecess will drop everything
from post-aphex gestures, to environmental kraut pulses, to defleshed
dubsteps, and the cultural detritus of the world hacked onto skeletal beats.
Leisure Muffin plays lofi chill to regressive epic bleepblop.
DJ Love Rocket takes you on a journey through distant universes
of warped and wandering soundscapes and celestial soundtracks.
With visuals by The Housewives' Guide To Anatomy & Animitron.

In the Open Air Courtyard:
Josh Kalin does live ice-sculpting with a touch of flame
while fire performers bring up the heat and beauty, rain or shine.

In the Gallery:
Massive projections from One Night of Fire by
Jeanne Angel (if you were there you are now famous) and
bring a shirt or flag for free fire screen prints by
Ad-Hoc Arts. It's like wearable vandalism.

Plus Jeremy Nelson and Devin Elijah make you
beautiful with pro portrait sessions to be broadcast
throughout the venue and online into perpetuity. To see
portraits from our last event look to:
http://jeremynelsonstudio.com/PortraitParties/PortaritParties/

All this with cheap booze and a few things
you'd never expect at:

3rd Ward Brooklyn
195 Morgan Ave.
Take the L train to Morgan Ave and walk 4 blocks north.

Saturday, July 28th
10pm to 7am or later
Only $10 - Strictly 21+

Fall WildFire Tickets are on sale - Sept 20 - 23

Hello Everyone,
Fall WildFire tickets are now on sale. This will be our 6th performing fire arts training retreat, and a continuation of the amazing sharing, learning, and growing environment that so many of you have helped create. This fall will have even more emphasis on all of the performance aspects of our arts while maintaining the incredible level of technical instruction.

WildFire attendance is capped at 150 people. We sold out in the spring in four weeks. The fall will probably sell out in less.

For information about classes (spring's schedule is up currently), a description of the event, pictures, maps, directions, a survival guide, and to buy tickets go to - www.copperheadfire.com/wildfire/

One Night of Fire | NYC | 14th of July, 2007 [Bastille Day]

Dear incendiary creatures --

This is a call for all fire badasses who are in the NYC-area, and those from out of town who happen to find themselves in the dirty apple.
On the evening of the 14th of July -- there will be an explosion of color, sounds, glitter, all streaming into a street procession.. in Brooklyn.. in Mad-hattan.. into the subways.. and onto sandy shores. Hard to describe, but a video from last year's event will be busted out on this site soon:

http://www.thedanger.com

This special night is conjured up by an alliance of brilliant NYC-based artist groups such as The Lady
Circus, Rubulad, Madagascar, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, TheDanger,
NonsenseNYC, Rant Rhapsody, Winkel Presents etc...

It's going to be beautiful, insane, and pretty much blow all yr circus minds.

Does this resonate?

contact me directly ASAP, so i can give you the glorified lowdown.

xox deb

plugging Sage workshop

Hi everybody,

my friend Sage is doing some workshops @ 3rd ward in a few weekends...

http://newyork.tribe.net/event/Sages-PoiStaff-Workshops-New-York-3-sessions/brooklyn-ny/7a0e3713-bb9f-4f58-96f7-d64d71db1837

Sage is pretty legendary in the fire community, possibly the first ever international spinning superstar. her style was featured on home of poi circles of light 2 video competition (which she won) and subsequently Home of Poi produced an entire dvd based on her. I wanna say that i've yet to see a more complete performer, she combines her considerable skills and tricks w/ unparalleled stage presence and dance moves and always gets the crowd going nuts. These should be some very high level workshops!

I'm organizing a little fire jam this Sunday, the 13th, in Brooklyn. It'll be on a rooftop in Brooklyn (same place as last time), 8pm till whenever... though it's possible we may meet early and have a barbecue on the roof.

The venue is not far from the Brooklyn Museum #2/3 subway stop at Prospect Park. Drop me a private message if you're interested - I'd like to get a head count - and I'll fill you in on the details!

I posted this to the email list, already, but I will be practicing this Sunday from 7PM-9PM at Grand Ferry Park in Williamsburg. It's a fine park where Grand meets the river with grass and waterfront views.
This will be a rehearsal for the Burning Man Fire Conclave, but by all means come to practice with us.

There have been some rumors about PoiWithMatt this weekend in Queens.

They are untrue.

Some folks might say that I started those rumors but let's not all go pointing fingers and spreading the truth around.

What's important is that there is NO PoiWithMatt this weekend or anytime in April.

PoiWithMatt will resume in May.

Those of you that paid online will not be refunded because I already spent the money.

We regret any inconvenience.

Hey poi people,
We weren't able to get the Columbus Sq studio for this Monday, so I have two other options booked. If you'd like to practice, please message me back with which one(s) you would be interested in attending! I'll keep whichever one gets the most responses.

Sunday night: 7-9pm, near Penn Station (8th Ave betw. 36 & 37)

Monday night: 8-10 pm, 72nd st betw. Columbus & Amsterdam
(Subways B-C to 72nd Street, or 1-2-3 to 72nd Street)

This will be an indoor, non-fire practice in a dance studio space with mirrors & wood floor. I'm asking for $5 to defray the cost of the studio rental.

Hope to see you there!

Burningman Fire Conclave 2007 (Already!)

Hi everyone,

For those of us who plan on going to Burning Man this year its time to start thinking about the fire conclave. Lucky and I will be organizing a group this year and Crimson would like at least a partial list of who will be joining us by next week. If you are interested in spinning with us, please send me an email that gives your full name, your pyrotechnic instruments and any known availability issues.

In order to raise the overall level of our performance this year we are going to be asking you to attend a monthly rehearsal and a few auxillary rehearsals if you want to be featured as a soloist. Artist tickets this year are entirely contingent on your attendance of these rehearsals. I will make the requirements clear at the first rehearsals and I won't be sending a complete performers list to Crimson until July.

Of course we are all busy people, and the idea of a lot of rehearsals may sound daunting. I will do my best to make sure that these rehearsals stay focused and ultimately rewarding. Free spinning is always fun, but working together creates something much larger than the sum of its parts. It will make a few evenings of your time well worth the effort.

If you are unsure of your skill level, don't be afraid. The choreography this year will emphasize staging with very simple combinations. If you can walk and do the weave everything will be all right.

Finally, to be totally clear, Lucky and I are not necessarily organizing the only group from New York. If you feel like this might be too much of a time commitment or you don't want to deal with other people's schedules, there may be other options available.

Thanks for reading,

Ben

And I mean an actual workshop of someone teaching a class.

I need to know who is interested in having lessons on Int. Poi and Dance Technique with poi?

DEFNITELY REPLY TO THIS!!

The reason why is that a guy was kind enough to offer teaching a class for free in NYC from SF. So I and him need to know what intrest is out there for a workshop possibly on Feb 1st. If you are interested or looking to learn something esle, post it. He plays with almost every toy so I'm sure you can get a few good tips from him. I'll tell him to post here so you'll know who he is. ok?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Burning Xmas trees

So, I'm not familiar at all with Flambe Volupte (though of course we have fire dancers and whatnot out here in the SF Area). I'm just an old-fashioned pyromaniac. You know, burning coffee creamer and photographs in the alley behind your house, making burned and melted stuff into art, unusual fixation on bonfires. The usual.

And I have a fireplace that I love dearly, but I'm very serious about burning safe stuff in it. I never burn plastic, I'm not psycho. And I try to burn good woods that will minimize my risk of chimney fires. I actually heard that it's now illegal to build fireplaces into new homes but I can't find any confirmation on that -- anyone know?

Anyway, I searched for a pyromania tribe and this was as close as it got. I've been using the occasional trimming from my Xmas tree (which is still up) as tinder, and it's just so tempting to burn the whole bloody thing. I mean, the sizzling. It's terribly satisfying. Internet searches keep turning up pleas not to burn my tree, and no tips on how to do it. I definitely think burning the trunk while it's still green is a bad idea. But the branches? All that nice tinder. I wouldn't have to work hard to get any logs going for months.

I don't know. I guess I'm looking for excuses. Do some types of Xmas trees produce more creosote than others? I haven't decided to burn it for sure. We'll see. My grandmother said that they used to always burn their tree after Christmas, and it's tempting to call that permission and go for it.

Scheduled Poi Practice - Please Respond

Hey Everyone!!

So here's the thing. Over the weekend I reserved a studio for this coming thursday, Jan 11th. It's in a different location and I think you'll like this one better. I rented out the space from 6p to 8p. I couldn't do it 7 to 9 or extend until 9 since there is another class after us.

The location of the studio changed. It's at 939 8th Ave between 55th & 56th Street on the 3rd floor. I am keeping the class at $5 per person.

So now I just need to know who's coming? If I don't get enough responses on Wednesday, I'll cancel the class and re-schedule for another time. So if you are really interested, please let me know. Hope to see some of you. Take it easy. Ciao!

Fire Performing at NYC Decompression

Dear Fellow Fire Performers,

As I take a deep sigh of relief, I can finally publicly speak about fire at NYC Decompression. It has been an unusually difficult situation this year due to unforeseen complications between our venue, 3rd Ward, and fire permits. However, fire is officially on, and I look forward to seeing so many of you show off your talents for the New York burner community.

A few of you have been in touch with me already, but it is important that everyone interested in fire performing/safetying at decompression send me a quick message with:

Your Name:
Playa Name:
Fire Tools:
Phone #:
Email:
Emergency Contact Info:

I will send out a letter on Friday, acknowledging that you are on my list.

Additionally, Decompression has changed its policy and there will be ADVANCED TICKETS ONLY. This means that you must buy your tickets online at http://www.brcnyc.com/tickets.htm before Saturday morning or you will not be let into the venue. That would truly be a bummer. Burn bright you pyros!

Much Love,
Lucky

I'm going to place an order for Duvetyne in the next couple days...
anyone else want some? I expect it'll come to about $6-7/yard, though I
might be able to get it cheaper, especially if we get a bunch of it.
Message me directly if you're interested.

(Duvetyne is a fire-resistant fabric, great for fire safety - you can
put out flaming wicks with it, and it's much more portable than a wet
towel.)

At 54" wide, one yard is about enough for two decent-sized pieces for
fire safety.

Heya everyone,

I'm new to this tribe. I've just moved back to Long Island and I've scrolled thru the recent posts - seeing some posts about others from Long Island (seemingly relatively near by) but.. no exacts..

I'm a beginner spinner (lol) having spun poi for the past 3-4 months - using fabric and glowstick/LED poi. I'm interested in moving into spinning fire and learning how to safely, as well as developing more complex moves. Other styles...

Anyone else around/out there interested in meeting up on Long Island.. ? NYC's a bit of a trip

~~ Burning with creative passion,
Faye

Fall WildFire in ONE month

Hello All,
The fall WildFire retreat is less then four weeks away. If you are currently or aspiring to be involved with the dance, drum or fire performing arts then don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn and grow at the largest north east gathering built just for you. The spring WildFire retreat had over 100 artists attend and taught more then 30 classes in a verity of disciplines. This fall we have expanded added more class types and will be offering public transportation access (check out the website for details). We are also opening an indoor area for performing arts equipment vendors to come and show their wares. This is a great opportunity to see, hold, and play with different toys made by different folks. If you are a vendor of performing arts toys and want to participate in this way, please email chad@freedomthrufire.com (no charge to setup, you just have to be open to educating everyone on your stuff).

Summary Info
Sept 11th – 17th
Public Transportation is available
Located at a picturesque Southern CT river front location with hot showers and full bathrooms - directions on website
Car camping type venue – with many pre-built tents and bunk beds if you want them (first reserve, first get)
There are no public audiences at WildFire just performing artist
Classes are taught all four days, with spontaneous sharing happening constantly
Website - www.freedomthrufire.com

Tickets are limited to 150 and ticket prices go up on Sept 1st ($75 now $100 after the 1st). Many people have commented that this is the cheapest and best way they could spend a three day weekend (they really say that – ask them). All food is included in your ticket price and it is good food.

Best wishes to you no matter the route your path takes you on. If these performing arts are a part of your path, then I really hope to see and share with you at WildFire. FYI - For those attending Burning Man, you can check out the WildFire Tribe site to find other north east performing artist that are attending BM and where we are having meet ups and stuff (http://tribes.tribe.net/wildfireretreat/).

Walk in peace,

Hey everyone,
This is the one month + one week reminder for the upcoming North East’s performer’s retreat – WildFire. If you are a beginner or a long time professional performing artist (drum, dance, fire, or otherwise), this retreat is an adventure created just for you. Let this be the jump start to your summer performing arts journey. Definitely check out the website, find, share or offer a ride, pack your performing/camping gear and don’t miss this incredible weekend. Tickets are limited and time is quickly running out.

Pertinent Info
June 8-11
Tickets are $75 now and $100 at the gate (includes all classes, hot showers, and all meals)
150 tickets are available
Located in Southern CT at an incredible remote camp ground (with a lake and boats…)

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:
Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

Hey there:
Do people on this board know where/when there are events where people actually burn? I only know of Thompkins Square, practice poi only. I'd love to know if there is anwhere in these 5 buroughs where people actually use fire without finger wagging from NYPD. Are there official get togethers or parties or do you just have to be lucky enough to get on someone's roof?

Thanks!

Hello,
I showed up at Thompkins Sq. Park this Thursday. There were only a few in attendence, and they said nobody lights up due to police. Is there a place in the city where people meet up regularly to burn and practice?
If not, I'm happy to help people get onto my rooftop. It's off the L train in Brooklyn, a big space where nobody will bother us. Any interest?

Hello Fire family (welcome back playa attendees). Just a reminder that in two weeks the largest north east performing artist gathering ever will be held in sourthern CT. This festival is meant for anyone who is already in the performing arts or is wanting to start that incredible journey (so you don't have to know a thing when you get there, but you have to be ready to learn). We are offering a wide range of classes from all fire arts toys (POI, contact staff, short staffs, fire dart, swords, etc) , to belly dancing, drumming, fire first aide, equipment making, etc (check out the crazy class schedule on the website). We are currently expecting over 80 performers with the only thing this incredibly community oriented event is missing is you.

Safe journeys,
Hi there;
I live in Manhattan, been practicing with tennis balls and rope for about 1 year. This summer my sister and best friend helped me make my first pair of fire poi and I set them on fire. I'm now in NYC and trying to find people to practice with/learn from. Please let me know of any gatherings, classes or such that I might join in. I can't go on my roof anymore - landlord said...:o(

Free Fuel on Weekends @ Di5orient 2005: Going Mobile

On Friday and Saturday, the Di5orient Express will be providing fire performers with free white gas and lamp oil (while it lasts)--which I'm organizing.

Di5orient loves performers grooving to our music: fire performers, poi spinners, hoopers, dancers, jugglers, etc. We'll welcome you anytime.

Disorient's bringing a new beast to BRC this year: the DI5ORIENT EXPRESS (DEX) - a massive art car slash mobile sound system, made with love in NYC and dragged to the playa by a crackerjack team of machine elves.

Each night, we'll park and play next to a different piece of spectacular Playa art, bringing our music, light, and fire next to stone, earth and steel.

If listed, nightly locations are tentative. Updates will be posted at our base camp: 8:00 and Esplanade.

Or just look for the blinking, orange "Di5" sign on the big bus with no sides and all the speakers on top and the 18' LED semicircles making those cool patterns...(well, you'll know it once you see it!)

Here's the lineup:

MON - Warm-up in camp, with house, breaks, & chill-out from camp DJs.
*Di5orient, 8:00 and Esplanade

TUES - Gloriously techy stuff: Spinoza (electro/tech-house), Artur (funky techno), Wolf + Lamb (minimal tech-house), The Eye (minimal techno & Goa trance).
*Party starts at the greeters station and then moves to open playa

WEDS - House, and lots of it: Laird (breaky house), Bass (tribal house), Vitamin Devo vs Biancadina (progressive house), Arrow Chrome (tribal house). Artur (deep house), Sascha (chillout).
*Location TBA

THURS - Space Cowboys ahoy!! Cap'n Kirk brings a crew to rock our beast with breakbeats (plus D&B by Arrow Chrome). Then we head to Fringe to see Hamsa Lila bringing in the dawn.
*At "the big tree"; Pilgrimage to The Fringe, Amnesia and 3:00

FRI - Freek Factory presents: Lorin Bassnectar, All Good Funk Alliance, Rodman, Rhythmystic, Mikio, and Ooah -- all kinds of breaks, all night and all morning long, with a Freekily massive boost to the bass!
*Deep playa, directly behind The Man (12:00)

SAT - Dawn set by Yossi Fine (world/dub). Post-burn lineup tbd. We host the party all night and all morning long. Party ends SUN at noon.
*We bring the DEX right next to the smoking embers of The Man

We'll see you all out there, blinking in the distance with love!!!!!

It is supposed to be absolutely breath taking.. I am definitely planning to recoup for a couple days after the BM temple burns. If anyone is interested in takin on this challenge with me or attempting to at least, or wants more info or convincing, let me know.
Man burns in 46 days!!!!!

Hi,

I'm from SF but traveling back east for a bit to visit family. My nephews were enamored with my poi the last time I was here, and I'd like to get them each a set of Zuni practice poi as a present. And I didn't get a chance to buy them before leaving home.

Does anybody have a recommendation of a shop in Manhattan where I could buy these? Or if you know of any place in either Boston or the western Philly suburbs, I'll also be there before heading to NYC.

Thanks.

Please contribute to the North/Central/South American Fire Database

My handle is agni, my name is scott, our troop name is agnisattva(agni is sanskrit for fire, sattva is sanskrit for essence). I spin staves, poi, whip, juggle a little and use an array of other as yet unnamed implements created in the metal shop I am working in. I travel alot and spin whenever/wherever I can. as of this moment I am planning an open ended fire tour into central/south america in an old school bus with 3 other fire junkies.

One of my projects is organizing a database of the u.s. and north/central/south america which will allow an individual to research the laws and requirements of each region, and provide contact information for other artists, officials, events, organizations, supplies, etc...

Any suggestions to make it more benificial to the community is appreciated.

Any information you would like to contribute would also be appreciated.

I would like to eventually teach classes on the art, sciences, history and spirituality of fire dancing as I believe they all play a large part in the connection between the human conscience/subconscience and the use of fire as a form of individual expression/reflection.
Until next time,
May all your burns inspire awe in yourself.

Extra Poi for Sale-Trade

So my loving family got my a new set of fire poi for Christmas. Problem is, I already have a good set.

They're in perfect condition, from houseofpoi, and still unopenned. I'd be willing to sell them or work out a trade, maybe for a used firestaff?

I'm from California but here in NYC for a few weeks over the holidays and would love to find a way to do this. Email me and make me an offer.

Hope you're all spinning and grooving on :).

I got my wicks early today, i had been walking around playing with them all day to get used to their weight compaired ot my poi... unfortunatelly i had my fuel at home instead of at the dorm with me, but my friend had lighter fluid, and while volitile it was flamable and i was excited beyond belief, so of course 1/4th a bottle of lighter fluid, a moist towel and a clearing off the path, and i was spinning my first flames... It was amazing, the sound of it rushing around and you and the feeling of being in the middle of it...
I'm still getting tweaks of euphoria...

what was your first time like?

At the end of the month. A friend has a chain mail booth at a convention that I will be helping with but for the most part I will be hanging around the city with some friends, and visiting their shows (Todd Robbins Carni Knowledge, Starshine Burlesque as well as Ty Fy show on Sat night).
I will have all day Sat open for fun and frolic, until about 9 at night. If anyone wants to meet up...message me.
Take care!

though I do like fire acts too....one of the characters under my stage name Balloonhedz *is* The Naughty Fireman. On a couple of occasions Ive performed with Tyler Fyre of the Coney Island Sideshow and Lucky Stiff. I gear up and carry/hold hius fuel bucket.
Im a career member of the fire service here in NYC...so fire, in various aspects, is my lifestyle. Im the cook on my group at work.
Hows it going folks?
